The ribbon cutting ceremony for the newly-renovated Mississippi Avenue Apartments took place at 1320 Mississippi Avenue SE, Washington, DC on Thursday, October 13, 2011. WCS Construction began work on the 19-unit multi-family shelter in August, 2010.

Originally built in 1956 as an apartment house, it was later converted into a Metropolitan Police Department substation. Vacant for almost twenty years, the major renovation components included hazmat remediation and abatement, total gut, a three-stop hydraulic elevator, and extensive handicap access ramp. Owned by the District of Columbia and developed and operated by William C. Smith + Co., the structure is three stories with a partial basement on less than ¾ of an acre. The apartments range from one, two and three bedroom, with four of them being ADA units.

Mississippi Avenue Apartments’ development is the result of a successful partnership involving multiple District agencies, developer William C. Smith + Co., and DC nonprofit Community of Hope (COH). Government partners include the DC Department of Human Services, the DC Department of Housing and Community Development, the DC Housing Authority, and the DC Department of Mental Health. William C. Smith + Co. developed the property and serves as the property manager. Rental subsidies for families are supplied by the District, and COH will provide case management and social services.

The ribbon cutting was attended by DC Mayor Vincent C. Gray. Following a short program, tours of the new facilities were conducted including four ADA accessible apartments.
